occupy shanghaiOCCUPY: SHANGHAI!

Art & Music Benefit for Occupy Ottawa, in solidarity with OWS.

Tuesday, February 7 @ 7 pm - 10 pm

Enter "OCCUPY: SHANGHAI!" The good folks over at Ottawa's first Chinese Restaurant have graciously agreed to host this historic event, as OO: Arts & Culture continues the Full Moonthly tradition started in December. Art work will be on display for the entire month, provided by OO's Sarah Barbary, A. James Brummel, Colin White, &c., with half the proceeds going to OO donations. MUSIC will also be on the menu with Maxim's Sicks Sicks Sicks, Oliver Davies, Dawn Stokaluk, Adam 3, Seamus Mulready, &c.

This will also be a chance to unofficially "meet the occupation" in Chinatown! This is a show (and a movement) for everyone. "OCCUPY: SHANGHAI!" is for all those interested continuing a dialogue that was started in October (in Ottawa), and examine not only the truth, but also the beauty of protest.

PAST DECEMBER EVENTS

CLOSING FORMAT by OPEN FORMAT

The Shang -FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30,  9 PM - 1:30 AM

OPEN FORMAT was a monthly series that ran through 2011, and presented a changing roster of secret DJs mixing together music they love, freely and regardless of genre.

CLOSING FORMAT is the last in the series, and will feature special out-of-town guest.

Admission is free
but donations are requested, with the DJs of each night directing all monies to people and/or places in the community where it may be helpful.

All proceeds of CF will be split evenly between SITE Ottawa and Vancouver's PIVOT:

SITE
http://ottawa.ca/health_safety/living/dat/drug/needles_en.html

"...an effective mandatory health program, which has been in operation since 1991...deemed a necessary public health measure to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, primarily HIV and Hepatitis-C virus, and to minimize the risks associated with substance use in society. "

PIVOT
http://www.pivotlegal.org/

"Pivot's mandate is to use the law to address the root causes of poverty and social exclusion. Our name is metaphor for our approach to social change - by making the most tangible violations of human rights the focal point of our efforts, we exert maximum pressure in order to shift society toward greater equality and inclusivity."

==========================

Massive gratitude to those who made this series possible:

- Shanghai Restaurant, and Don in particular, who has been so welcoming and patient with us, and let us use their fine space and PA for the series, for free, and made us some nice little finger foodies and menus, and provided a space in which we could play this music.

- CHUO 89.1 FM, who sponsored the series with in-kind donation of radio ads that they kindly allowed us to make.

- Everyone who came out, donated money and ears and time and always created such a friendly, stimulating and open vibe at the OF nights.

- And lastly but importantly-- all the DJs who took part and donated their time and love of music. Without whom.

Stay tuned...from the ashes of OF perhaps something new for 2012...

Divergence Movie Night: The Queer Nineties

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 8:00 pm - 11 pm

Free admission, $5-$10 suggested donation.

Divergence Movie Night presents “The Queer Nineties”
In 1990, lesbians and gays had no recognition of their relationships in law and the Canadian government had still not included non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the Federal Human Rights Act. By the end of the decade, lesbians and gays had won relationship recognition and adoption rights in most jurisdictions in Canada. From the defeat of same-sex relationships recognition in Ontario (1994); to the Surrey School Board ban of 3 children’s books (1997); from the role of ethno-diverse communities and labour within the LGBT movement; to the litigants and lawyers at the forefront of key Charter rights cases – The Queer Nineties takes a look at an amazing decade in the struggle for lesbian and gay equality in Canada.

CATwalk SABBATICAL!

Art Exhibition - Sept. 1st to 30th.

Vernissage -Sept.8th, 8-10 p.m.

Time to renovate, rejuvenate, exhibit and even have a baby!”

We will be showing a collection of our artwork at our favourite Centretown Shanghai Restaurant from September 1st to the 30th, 2011. The vernissage will be held on September 8th at the Shanghai Restaurant from 8-10pm!

A group of downtown Ottawa artists invites the curious to prowl through their homes and studios during the fifth annual Centretown Art Tour (CAT). This self-guided tour will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2011, from 10am to 5pm. Tours are free and many works will be for sale.

A preview show will be held at the Shanghai Restaurant (651 Somerset) throughout the month of September, with a CAT kick-off party on Thursday, September 8nd, from 8pm to 10pm. After the success of the edition of the CAT in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, the experience is being happily repeated.

During the tour, visual artists, of a wide variety of media, will be opening up their creative spaces for guests to explore.
