Divergence Movie Night presents

"Queer China, ‘Comrade’ China (Zhi Tong Zhi)"

Wednesday, October 20 · 8:00pm - 10:00pm

Free admission, $5-$10 suggested donation.

A comprehensive historical account of the queer movement in modern China. Queer China, 'Comrade' China documents the changes and developments in LGBT culture that have taken place in China over the last 80 years.

Unlike any before, this film explores the historical milestones and ongoing advocacy efforts of the Chinese LGBT commu...nity. The film examines how shifting attitudes in law, media and education have transformed queer culture from being an unspeakable taboo to an accepted social identity.

The film culminates with the submission of Dr. Li Yinhe’s Same-sex Marriage Bill to the Legislative Affairs Commission of the National People’s Congress in 2003, a major landmark event in the ongoing struggle for acceptance of queer identity in China.

Please note: Shanghai will be having their normal full dinner service, so feel free to arrive earlier for a fabulous meal and eat during the movie.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=10150097430505261&ref=ts

secret trial five is a punk band that write songs about zombies eating world leaders, freeing prisoners in guantanamo bay, and more. they started out in 2006 in vancouver (unceded coast salish territory), and when lead singer sena moved to toronto in 2008, she connected with toronto-based musicians sidra and manal, who ended up joining the band. the band's name comes from the name given to five Muslim men, who in 2006, were detained using 'secret evidence', spending most of their time in solitary confinement in canadian prisons without charge, but since all have been released (under strict bail conditions/house arrest). the band has been identified as being part of a genre called "taqwacore", but they now actively reject that association, as it not only limits them, but also, taqwacore has caused a racist, islamophobic and sensationalist media frenzy.

Join us for the first comic jam of the year! Bring favourite supplies, a good dose of creativity and a sense of humour.

Artists gather to collaborate on panel-to-panel comics at the Shanghai. The work is scanned and posted monthly on the official website.

Be a part of the comic jamming community in Ottawa and meet new people! The best of the Jam's artwork is going to be put out in book form May 2010 to celebrate the Jam's 1st anniversary.

Looking forward to seeing you there :-)

New Year Comedy Extravaganza

Get ready to laugh your rice sacks off! (Oriental Joke)
Friday, January 15, 2010 at 8:00pm - 1:00am (KARAOKE to follow)

$3 at the door!    Bring your friends and family!   Show starts at 9, seating starts at 8.

Incidentally we've been voted as the number one place to get a laugh in Ottawa. Coincidentally, Shanghai also serves classy Asian cuisine at ridiculously justifiable overpriced prices. In conjunction with the classy, scrumptious food, we've got a comedy night that's pretty damn funny so far.

Throw two and two together and what we got? We get tons of people choking on wantons and rice chunks a plenty whilst listening to some cool comics strut their stuff.

Jesus! Sounds like there's so many things to do! Is there anything else you should know?

Stay for Karaoke after the darn comedy show! We want the whole o' Chinatown to know that we got talent in our quaint little city of Ottawa!

Also, here's our
star studded lineup with professional/amateur comedians.

Vei Chong, Joel West, Matt Gallant, Emily Oh, Trevor Thompson, Anto Chan, Special Guest - China Doll

For more information and directions, call Vei at (613) 265 0928 or the Shanghai at (613) 233-4001.
