Louis
Helbig: Aerials
April 7th, 7pm-10pm ...music by CPI
(
http://www.facebook.com/l/2cfa3aCfdXVbHZdc41xjzvI_4JQ/thetastates.com/)
Born in Toronto and raised in Williams Lake British Columbia, Louis
Helbig is an Ottawa-based artist/photographer specializing in
aerials. He is a commercial pilot and a self-taught photographer.
His work has been exhibited and published in Canada and
internationally.
His background includes professional roles with different public,
NGO and private organizations in Canada and abroad including the
Government of BC, Foreign Affairs Canada, CUSO and Sharp Wings. He
has an MSc in Economic History from the London School of Economics
and represented Canada as a member of its National Cross Country Ski
Team.
Louis Helbig’s imagery is often complex and contradictory. One
critic has described his work as teetering between documentary and
abstract. He has been both commended and criticized for how he
depicts various subjects, finding beauty in the mundane as well as
the controversial.

MARCH FEATURED ARTIST |
The
Birds and the Bees: New Work by Julie Cruikshank
Thursday, March 3 at 7:00pm - 12:00am
"The Birds and the Bees" is a body of
work dealing with the ideas of domesticity and women's work,
with a touch of sexuality.
As a working female artist, I have often found that the
attributes stereotypically associated with my gender tend to
be negatively represented in art. This is a phenomenon that
I want to explore through my work. The way I see it, small,
domestic, traditionally feminine tasks, sentiments, and
materials a...re
not necessarily something to be rebelled against or
disproven by female artists. I believe that traditionally
female domestic tasks such as sewing, fabric arts, and
childbirth and care are valuable in their own right and
deserve to be explored and represented through art. I feel
that these tasks, which on many levels remain integral to
women's lives, are often overlooked - like the inner
workings of a hive of bees.
The work I make is small - it is dainty and unassuming and
it doesn't try to grab the viewer with its boldness. Instead
it invites the viewer to discover it slowly and to form
their own conclusions from the layers of meaning I have
inserted. Using a combination of fabric, lace, collage, ink,
and paint, I have attempted to create a body of work that is
at once traditional and radical. This work was born from
stereotypes; I hope that through careful examination, I have
revealed them as something more.

AUGUST FEATURED ARTIST |
Kate
Barry
7 sins’
is an exhibition and sale
of nine sketches that come from my current research surrounding the
relationship between medieval Christia
nity
and the female body.
In this small show there are seven text-based paintings based on the seven Christian sins, the sins are written in the original Latin. The seven sins are as follows: luxuria (extravagance), gula (gluttony), avaritia (avarice/greed), acedia (acedia/discouragement), ira (wrath), invidia (envy) and superbia (pride).
There are two other paintings of the Sacred Heart that explore one of the most famous religious symbols, The Sacred Heart of Mary. I am intrigued by this icon of Christianity because some scholars trace its symbolism back to the ‘pagan’ era or the female centered polytheistic traditions of Europe prior to Christianity.
"Ira" is the name of my current performance that will take place Thursday, August 26 at 8 p.m. The performance starts at the Saint Jean Baptiste church, 96 Empress Street and it will finish at the Shanghai.http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=149327788412892

|
JUNE FEATURED ARTIST |

Tuesday July 6, 2010 7 - 9 p.m.
About the work:
For Chinatown Re-mixed, I painted a series of five paintings that
are inspired by a section of Somerset Street on a rainy night.
Artificial lights are their main feature. The works were shown at
the Pho Bo Ga King, 778 Wellington Str. West during the event
Chinatown Remixed, (May 8 - June 8 2010) before being shown at the
Shanghai Restaurant.
The paintings Chinatown Re-mixed and Open, are a re-mix of
photographs taken from the inside of a shop and a restaurant. They
show reflections on the windows of the interior spaces as well as
reflections of streetlights on the wet pavement outside.
These paintings connect to my body of work that shows the allure of
speed, colours and light of urban life.

MAY FEATURED ARTIST |
My
artworks address particular contexts. Given a billboard on which to
work, I designed mock advertisements; allowed to work in a military
bunker, I made some propaganda. When faced with a conventional gallery
space, I am inclined to play off the stylings of contemporary art.
Within the above however, there are constants. I have an abiding
interest in abstraction and the history of the last century. Of specific
interest are those points where design and art cross, ie: the Bauhaus,
the Soviet Avant-garde, and American industrial design of the 1930s.
Stylistic references to these movements are referred to, coyly, to
enhance my investigations into the Cold War, architecture and our
consumer society.
My intent is to satirize, but I hope I do so with a degree of subtlety.
By closely emulating graphic styles and employing commercial production
techniques, I am able to hide my own hand and create images that defy
easy interpretation as art. The results are mildly subversive.
Art Shows in OTTAWA's CHINATOWN for the month of MAY
Somerset Street West, Between Preston & Percy
EXPLORE Chinatown! Over 30 ARTISTS in over 25 NON-TRADITIONAL SPACES.
VERNISSAGES for ALL ARTISTS - SATURDAY MAY 2nd , 2 pm - 5 pm.

the public with endearing karoake croonings along Somerset St.
CHINATOWN REMIXED is the first event of its kind in Ottawa; this
artistic mix-up of culture, art and food promises something for every
taste. It is high time to celebrate our city's cultural
endeavours. Time to inject into this world a new vitality.
